Organizational structures can be classified into a number of types, including functional, divisional, matrix, federations and networks. There are many examples of organizations but among the most successful organizations are Coca-Cola and Toyota Motor Corporation. These organizations represent companies that operate for very long time very successfully in global business. These companies are in first 100 top companies in the world. The Coca-Cola Company operates in more than 200 countries and markets with nearly 500 brands and 3,000 beverage products. Toyota Corporation is currently the worlds largest automaker. Organizational Structure Every organization to be effective must have an organizational structure. It is the form of structure that determines the hierarchy and the reporting structure in the organization. It is also called organizational chart. There are different types of organization structures that companies follow depending on a variety of things; it can be based on geographical regions, products or hierarchy. To put it simply an organizational structure is a plan that shows the organization of work and the systematic arrangement of work. Types of Organizational structures TRADITIONAL STRUCTURES Traditional organizational structures focus on the functions, or departments, within an organization, closely following the organizations customs and bureaucratic procedures. These structures have clearly defined lines of authority for all levels of management. Two traditional structures are line and line-and-staff. LINE STRUCTURE The line structure is defined by its clear chain of command, with final approval on decisions affecting the operations of the company still coming from the top down. Because the line structure is most often used in small organizations—such as small accounting offices and law firms, hair salons, and mom-and-pop stores—the president or CEO can easily provide information and direction to subordinates, thus allowing decisions to be made quickly. LINE-AND-STAFF STRUCTURE While the line structure would not be appropriate for larger companies, the line-and-staff structure is applicable because it helps to identify a set of guidelines for the people directly involved in completing the organizations work. This type of structure combines the flow of information from the line structure with the staff departments that service, advice, and support them. Based on the companys general organization, line-and-staff structures generally have a centralized chain of command. The line-and-staff managers have direct authority over their subordinates, but staff managers have no authority over line managers and their subordinates. Because there are more layers and presumably more guidelines to follow in this type of organization, the decision-making process is slower than in a line organization. MATRIX STRUCTURE A variation of the line-and-staff organizational structure is the matrix structure. In todays workplace, employees are hired into a functional department (a department that performs a specific type of work, such as marketing, finance, accounting, and human resources) but may find themselves working on projects managed by members of another department. Organizations arranged according to project are referred to as matrix organizations. Matrix organizations combine both vertical authority relationships (where employees report to their functional manager) and horizontal, or diagonal, work relationships (where employees report to their project supervisor for the length of the project). Workers are accountable to two supervisors—one functional manger in the department where the employee regularly works and one special project manager who uses the employees services for a varying period of time Because the matrix structure is often used in organizations using the line-and-staff setup, its also fairly centralized. However, the chain of command is different in that an employee can report to one or more managers, but one manager typically has more authority over the employee than the other manager(s). Many firms (both small and large) have now realized the need for business alliances. In this perspective, firms use a variety of strategies to create an alliance with other firms, through people who can help their business grow. This process involves a variety of means and instruments which include networking with friends and colleagues, joining professional organizations, hiring skilled professionals for special needs, client referral development and the use of sophisticated information systems-networks. Networks are transforming the roles of employees in organizations. The back office has moved to the front and the new technology has changed many career paths. Salient Benefits It can serve as a transitional stage to help organizations to become leaner, more innovative and responsive in order to meet today’s organizational challenge to change. Enterprise networking also offers more timely, cost effective and integrated ways to make information available throughout an entire enterprise. If alliance partners are not pulling together in the same direction or have not agreed on how to measure success, there are going to be problems. Potential conflicts with members of the alliance can be lessened through agreements that are carefully drawn up at the outset as well as through reinforcement of the informal ties between members. Risk sharing and the establishment of long-lasting trust (through social ties) are what binds networked companies together. When reaching out and taking risks with another company, trust is vital. This is why the interplay between the business rationale and the social fabric becomes so prominent. Over time, the members of the network influence values and behaviour both above and below them in the larger organization. Networking is, in effect, reaching out and creating visibility for oneself and one’s company in niche or target markets. It is also the process of targeting and getting involved in associations, groups, clubs or other organizations where the customers and prospects in a niche market spend time with one another. In recent years, the rise of the â€Å"network† form of organization has been dramatic. Even economic sectors that were traditionally driven by conventional business and organizational rationales have espoused this novel form. Among such sectors are the healthcare sector, local and state public-service organizations, the oil industry and the insurance industry. Summary Baskin Enright, (2004) present that after a review of the studies of forgiveness logically could be grouped into 3 categories: decision-based, process-based group, and process-based individual interventions (p.79). Baskin Enright show through their studies why forgiveness is relevant by allowing one to see the importance of the counselor and counselee. One of our human natures is holding onto harm, grudges, and unable to forgive others. This article shows us that there are three categories forgiveness is based upon and how meta-analysis which was used in the studies shown throughout the article as mentioned above. Baskin Enright, (2004) that a Christian perception that God could meet basic psychological needs, in which a study of 225 Christians testing hypothesis (p. 79). Forgiveness is one of our downfalls its easier to hold onto anger than to let go. In this article it shows how Christians faith helps them forgive and move on without grudges. Baskin Enright, (2004) In the process versus decision the models of counseling highlight the importance of underlying the philosophical differences; in the first two models it shows that they are process-based, and the third is decision-based (p. 81). Forgiveness is a part of counseling it appears helping our clients see how forgiving can help the healing process is the hard part. Forgiving does not start with others; it starts within ones self. Baskin Enright, (2004) Each of us grieve in different ways and forgiveness is one of the uniqueness parts of the individual person. In the studies broke down it showed forgiveness is not a mental health variable (p. 87). Knowing that problems seem similar, one needs to remember that each person is unique in how they grieve, work through difficulties, and find a way to move forward. Through Christian counseling most are searching for a belief that will help them find their way; as vessels it is our faith that shines through to help them. Not only does one need to forgive the offender; but forgiving ones self, is important as well. Forgiving others is difficult but at times it seems forgiving ourselves can be the hard task at hand. Baskin Enright, (2004) The results of this study showed that the empirical evidence does not endorse the predominant cognitive decision-base intervention; due to forgiveness not being affected by counseling (p,87). Forgiveness needs to begin with the client learning to forgive themselves; so, they can have a better understanding of why they struggle with depression, loss and more. Summary of this article shows that one needs guidance in learning how to forgive and the importance of starting wit hin one self. Reflection In looking back on the article, it appears counselors need to focus on help their clients understand forgiveness and its meaning. Each person needs to find a place where they are safe and feel at peace within themselves. In the article it states that the studies may be complete or not complete. Baskin Enright, (2004) the empirical evidence supporting process models of forgiveness are apparent form the second category of studies (p.87) Baskin Enright, (2004) It showed that 0.82 effect the size of forgiveness; having the average person doing 75% better than the controlled group (p.87). The study does show that if used as a tool counseling can help one to learn what forgiveness is and why it is important to start with ones self. Given that each person is unique and know to people are going to deal with the same situation alike; it is the counselors part to teach what forgiveness means. Helping a client learn on a individual basis is important they need to understand why forgiveness is important and why it starts within them. Counselors need to make sure they know their limits and that their ideas are not impressed upon the client. Gaining our perspective onto our clients can be damaging more than helpful. In the article, it shows the difference between controlled groups and those who are free to make a choice in what they are taught. Reflection from this article is that each of us learn differently, and we are unique from others. Application Applying Biblical worldview in counseling forgiveness seems to hold value in most books of the Bible. Being a Christian counselor, we need to have faith in ourselves to help others. Praying is a part of forgiveness and it begins within each of us. Mark 11: 25-26 (NKJV) And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. [25] But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive you your trespasses. [26] Forgiving ourselves is the hardest part of the human dynamics Colossians 3:8 (NKJV) But now you yourselves are to put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy, language out of your mouth. Knowing that our hearts and thoughts are clean as counselors; when we are helping clients and in our personal life gives us peace of mind. Trust with our clients is important and our spirituality comes through in how we help others. I have found that praying and keeping my own self free through forgiveness can be helpful in my sessions. My degree originally was in Criminal Justices, now it is an emphasis for Human Service Counseling, I have had a long journey into forgiving myself and those who harmed me; this is why I chose this profession. My tendency to fix what is broken has been my downfall in my helping others. I have learned through Christ how to forgive myself and those who hurt me. I am learning that no matter how each situation is similar we all deal and learn forgiveness differently. In applying what this article has to offer will be a new challenge now that I have truly gone through it.
